SHOULD I INCLUDE AN OUTTER ENVELOPE?

If you are going the formal route for your wedding invitations you may want to include an outer envelope if you’re sticking to tradition. Although now a days the outer envelope is typically skipped. Outer envelopes are used to protect the whole invitation package since the outer envelope can get damaged in the mail.

Envelope Addressing Options

Here are some situtations, along with examples you may come across when addressing your wedding invitation envelopes.

Single Women or Man

Outer Envelope:
Miss Pamela Richards or Ms. Pamela Richards
or
Mr. Paul Johnson

Inner Envelope:
Miss Pamela Richards or Ms. Pamela Richards
or
Mr. Johnson

Single Women or Man & Date

Outer Envelope:
Miss Pamela Richards or Ms. Pamela Richards
or
Mr. Paul Johnson

Inner Envelope:
Miss Pamela Richards or Ms. Pamela Richards and guest
or
Mr. Johnson and guest

Divorced Woman

{If using her maiden name use “Ms.”}

Outer Envelope:
Mrs. Ashley Lopez or Ms. Ashley Lopez

Inner Envelope:
Mrs. Lopez or Ms. Lopez

Widow

Outer Envelope:
Mrs. Ashley Lopez

Inner Envelope:
Mrs. Lopez

Married Couple

Outer Envelope:
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Henderson

Mr. Robert and Mrs. Mary Henderson

Inner Envelope:
Mr. and Mrs. Henderson

Unmarried Couple Living Together

Both names should be included on the envelopes, but each name gets its own line with YOUR guest listed first.

Mr. Jameson

Unmarried Couple NOT Living Together

If they have been together less than a year address the invite to YOUR guest and “guest”. Otherwise both names should be included on the envelopes, but each name gets its own line with YOUR guest listed first.

Miss Julie Jennings

Inner Envelope:
Ms. Jennings and guest

or

Outer Envelope:
Miss Julie Jennings
Mr. Robert Jameson

Inner Envelope:
Ms. Jennings
Mr. Jameson

Same-Sex Couple

The same rules for any other unmarried or married couple apply here as well. If the couple is married, list the names on the same line.

Outer Envelope:
Ms. Joanne Jones and Ms. Samantha Phillips
or
Joanne Jones and Samantha Phillips

Inner Envelope:
Ms. Jones and Ms. Phillips
or
Joanne and Samantha

Children and Families

Children can be included on the inner envelope of their parents’ invitation by their name(s). They should not be addressed on the outer envelope. If the whole household is invited you can address the envelope as “Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and Family”

Outer Envelope:
Mr. and Mrs. Jeffery Smith

Inner Envelope:
Mr. and Mrs. Jeffery Smith, Jason, Miss Bethany and Miss Diane

Children 18 and Older

Children 18 and older should receive their own invitations, unless they live at home with their parents. In that case the invitation is addressed to “Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and Family”
